Art All Night – Sept 30th
September 30, 2023AUDITION NOTICE: One Mo’ Time
October 13, 2023As a socially conscious theater, “Black Lives DO Matter! This is not a Cliche… It’s a Fact!” is more than a theme, it is how we operate. We believe that theater is no longer just a place for enjoyment, but as a venue for social change. Change that can be accomplished through theater and the arts.
MAIN STAGE PRODUCTIONS. One Mo’ Time By Vernel Bagneris is more than a musical. It is a retrospective of the question, when it comes to the arts and the African American Community, has much changed over the years? Sunset Baby by Dominique Morisseau bridges the importance of family and the need of a formerly incarcerated single father trying to reconnect to his daughter.

AP LIVE PERFORMANCE SERIES. The Anacostia Playhouse has always provided a platform for artists and our live concert series reinforces that ideology. Many of those who perform during our live concert series are the very actors performing in our main stage productions! Adding a new dimension to our performance series will be spoken word poets. With their words and voices we can be inspired to act!
NEW VOICES NEW WORKS. New Voices New Works Playwright Pipeline series will take un-produced plays through a process that will take a playwrights play from page to stage, but provide vital feedback to help playwrights in their craft. As a recurring theme, “We are Family”, illustrates not just the importance of family, but how we truly define family. This November on the 6th, 13th, and 20th, we will showcase the works of 9 new playwrights and how they see family!

FOCUS ON EDUCATION. Theater can be a place for artisan education. The Anacostia Playhouse will continue to participate in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program, but provide educational opportunities for those interested in theater where we remove barriers of access either by location and finance. Anacostia is one of two theaters in Ward 8 and markets its theatrical performances to Ward 7, a Ward with no theaters.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECTS. If the Anacostia Playhouse is anything, we are a reflection of our community. Through our Liaison committees and feedback from our patrons, we will continue to actively engage our community through various programs such as DC Theater Week, Art All Night, and many others.
We will continue to create programming that not only feeds the soul, but the body. We know that HIV/AIDS proportionately affects the African American Community at a higher rate than any other. With community focused programs such as Worlds AIDS Day and National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, we can bring to light resources and the inequities in African American Healthcare.
COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMS. The Anacostia Playhouse believes that not only is community important, but collaboration is as well. Through collaborative works such as our Theater After Dark, we bring more thought provoking works while reaching a greater audience. October 27th and 28th, there will be two performances of Theater After Dark.
